How can i keep my ping down while playing call of duty 4.?

While playing on a server my ping starts climbing to a high of 999, causing me to lagg really bad. How can I stop my ping from climbing so high? I'm on dsl, and I have rebooted my system and even unplugged my modem for five minutes but my ping continues to climb while in a game.

Are you hooked into a router? If you are then you can get into the router settings and there are changes that can be made to optimize for gaming. If you are not then you may need to check and see what your DSL maximum speed is and have it changed to a higher one. I know that when we had the 5oo kb DSL it was not enough and we had to move it to 4GB to get the ping down
