in theory, they could give you a deal if you give up your dealer, but if your dealer finds out you gave him up, the cops may be the least of your worries.

In New York unlawful possession of marijuana(NY. Penal law 221.05), which is simple possession less than 25 grams of marijuana is not a crime. It is considered a violation(a non-criminal offense like littering), which is lower than a misdeedmeanor which means if you plead guilty you will not recieve a criminal record. For first time violaters your maximum penalty is $100. So it is basically up to you. It sounds like the cops are just fishing so they can make a bigger bust, because you are only facing a monetary penalty. Or if you want to make the whole thing go away you get a lawyer for about $1000 give or take to negociate that the ticket to be ACOD'd. ACOD is Adjournment in Contemplation of Dismissal, which means if you don't get in trouble for 6 months - year the ticket will be dismissed.

Get a lawyer.... even a misdemeanor conviction for drug possession is a very serious thing....and it will affect your employment and career options for the rest of your life.

You should of course agree to give up your dealer, but get a lawyer to advise you on the deal.

What people don't understand, when you go to court, the law is on trial as well as the crime. This is why we go before our peers. To prevent an over zealous government. I will explain. If the government passes a law that says all run away slaves, caught in the north, must be returned to, the owners in the south, we as citizens can find the slave not guilty. Because the law is unjust. This is what took place in the 1800s. If we find the law unjust to put pot smokers in jail, because we must pay taxes to keep them confined, and they are not a problem in society, we try the law, and find it is unjust.
this is the belief of the old supreme court and our founding fathers.
Remember government likes chaos, it creates more government! All in the way of protection and safety.
