The first three answers above me are all true. I wanted to add that no one knows the exact date that Jesus was born, so in order to celebrate His birthday they (which they? beats me) picked a time that was already in use by the pagans -- the time of Yule. Part of the Christmas tradition that isn't practiced as often anymore is to burn a Yule log in the fireplace -- this is also a pagan tradition.

The "Christmas" tree is historically a pagan symbol of life. (Thus the evergreen tree in the winter.) The Catholic church was very clever back in the early days of the church, and found that the best way to convert the non-believers of the pagan world was to incorporate their existing traditions into christian holidays. It originated in Germany and came to England when Prince Albert married Queen Victoria. (or at least when it came to wide spread observance in England and America.) My recollection is that the birth of Christ was also not in the dead of winter.

Another example of this is the Easter Bunny. Springtime pagan symbol of fertility.

Presents under the tree can be attributed to both the Wise men bearing gifts to Jesus and the secular spin off of Saint Nicholas (I believe German in origin.)

Actually, The Christmas tree and the associated gifts, were, lets say, stolen from the Pagans. Christianity adopted the holiday, that was originally Pagan, so they could convert Pagans to Christianity.

Christmas is a Pagan holiday. Rebundled as a Christian holiday.

Lots of our traditions have little or nothing to do with the holidays they are supposed to symbolize.

I believe that the tradition of decorating an evergreen tree goes back to 18th century Germany. It just kind of cauight on.

Our Christmas celebration is about birth (and rebirth) and an ever green tree can symbolize something changeless and eternal. Like how God can be reborn (in Christ) and yet timeless and unchanging.
