We decided to re-install our operating systems wipe out the computer and start from scratch. Now, it doesn't recognize the wireless card. We installed the driver, but the instructions say that the Windows will recognize the new hardware, but it doesn't. Everything was working fine before we wiped out the old operating system. Do we have to remove the card and re-install it?

I installed the drivers. Now it recogizes my wired network adapter, but not the wireless card. The instructions say that the "Found New Hardware Wizard" should appear and then you install the drivers. I tried manually installing the drivers first, but there is no installation file on the CD. I am at a loss for what to try next. It is a Gateway WGP-230 PCI card.

After you installed the OS, did you install all of the drivers for your motherboard. Windows will need, at the very minimum, the driver for the sound and the PCI buss bridge, but it is best to install all of the drivers so that you are not running under a generic "Windows" driver.

Next, most WIFI cards want the driver/software installed before you insert the card in it's PCI slot.

Drivers for the motherboard are on the disk that came with the the board or on the disk or disks that came with your computer. If you don't have these CDs, you can download these drivers from the manufacture's web site.

With the two wireless PCI cards that I have installed on my XP machine, I have had to carry out the following:

1) Install the drivers FIRST - before inserting any hardware
2) Shutdown PC
3) Install hardware with power off
4) Start up pc again

If you've already installed the drivers, I would have additional steps (before step 1) of:

0.1) Shut down PC
0.2) Remove hardware with power off
0.3) Start up PC
0.4) Uninstall existing driver software
0.5) Restart PC

Windows is picky about wireless PCI cards and you have to do things in the correct order.

Just be glad you're not trying to get it to work wit Linux :-)

I agree with one of the previous answers... try installing the drivers first, then insert the PCI card.

That will be the best bet, shut down the pc and remove the card. then start the pc up. when the pc fully turn on shutdown it and replace the card and start up it again. that should work. if that does not work email me for another suggestion.

The wireless network adaptor and wireless card are the same thing.
