I do alterations and often notice clothing that has too much fabric softener on it. I remember reading an article many, many years ago that stated that fabric softener overuse could lead to rendering diapers waterproof!
I am dismayed when I smell it on clothing I work on---sign of using too much. do you want others to smell your softened clothes or your perfume???
Also, I suspect, though have no proof, that it makes jeans wear out faster.
Try different laundry detergents---a stain that will not be removed by one may be removed by another.

I really like Method. It doesn't smell too strongly or of chemicals, and it does a pretty good job on my clothes. It also comes in this tiny little bottle that lasts freakin' forever, so that's good, too. I use Bounce dryer sheets, but that's it.
