and the good he finds in this evil man now?

What is his motive? I am especially interested in hearing from seniors who lived through World War II.

Thanks to all who participate.

Well, I haven't heard this or anything he's saying, so can't comment. Lots of people talk about Hitler, but surely most find nothing positive. I mean, what could one say? He improved the German economy....for awhile?

It's like remembering Mussolini for making the trains run on time, and he was just a bullying clown, not a sadistic bigoted despot. I didn't live through WWII, but I know it, very well. My Daddy fought in it, but not the European theater.

Note: Now I've read the other answers I can comment, at least on them. It appears that Smith was looking for a rationale or excuse for a madman's behaviour and that is just not possible, nor is it a commendable exercise, nor is justifying Smith's opinion; although I believe in his right to have one.

I was too young to have remembered anything, being born in 1942. All I know is from books.

I heard that Will Smith comment, Shrubbery knight was correct. Taking things out of context just confuses people.

Interesting bit of trivia: There was a drive to save every bit of metal for guns and bullets. I have some glass Christmas balls from the l940's that have cardboard hangers, instead of the metal caps! It even went that far!

Here is what Will Smith actually said:

###
“Even Hitler didn’t wake up going, ‘Let me do the most evil thing I can do today.’ I think he woke up in the morning and using a twisted, backwards logic, he set out to do what he thought was ‘good,’” Smith says. “Stuff like that just needs reprogramming.”

I think if anyone read the whole quote, they wouldn't be so shocked. He isn't saying he "finds good in this evil man", as your question suggests.

I don't know who Will Smith is.

But I do know that recognizing the fact that a lot of [most of] the meanness human beings perpetrate on one another is done by individuals who've convinced themselves it's the right thing to do would be a healthy change for all of us.

By allowing ourselves to think what happened in Germany to the German people after 1932 was just Hitler and Germans we blind ourselves to the real lesson to be learned from it.

The comment was taken out of context. Will Smith didn't say anything wrong.

If you actually read his quote, you wouldn't be stirring the s*** with this question. Smith stated that he believed Hitler was doing what he thought was good - and was not waking up in the morning trying to be evil. That makes a lot of sense when you think about it. If you ever bother to think, that is.

Will Smith is one of my favorite people. It is just not him to state what you said he said about Hilter. Read the other answers giving the correct statement.

You truly misunderstood the gist of the whole thing. I think the other answers will help you understand where you went astray.
