I also would like to know once you are on the L how do you know when a stop is coming up do they announce what is coming up next or is there a screen or anything? Thanks

There is generally a recorded announcement overhead ("This is Fullerton. Belmont is next, doors open on the right at Belmont,") although the speaker is admittedly broken in some of the cars. Also, you can look out the window and see the signs with the name of the stop, and there's a map posted on each train.

It is a pre-recorded announcement on the "EL". It tells the next stop and which side the doors will open.

The buses have a screen.

They announce it but listen carefully since they are not always clear. Also, there will be a map onboard that shows the stops.

The conductor announces the next stop unless he's being held up by gang thugs!

Look at the map over head.
