There is a joke about the word 'habit'
Try to remove alphabets one by one, (as if trying to get rid of some habit, little by little)...
Habit
Remove 'H'... a bit remains.
Remove 'a' ... it remains !!!
Now, for serious answer,
the simple way is to do everything consciously, not habitually.
What is not needed would get 'dropped' over a period of time. This method , simple, yet not easy (doing things in full awareness, consciously is the part that takes effort!), has lasting rewards, with no residue or side-effects !

I once had to stop biting my nails to seem more professional in the work place. I have been biting my nails since I was a kid so it was really hard to get a hold on this habit. What worked for me was to always have fresh nail polish on them and to chew gum. I would chew gum as a diversion. The nail polish was trickiest because if the polish was chipped, I would still bite my nails. I had to paint my nails every night and keep a bottle in my purse for touch ups. It worked though, I haven't been a nail biter in 5 years and I don't have to keep up the nail polish thing anymore. I think a diversion is definitely key in breaking old habits.
