Cystitis is a common infection in all women, but so rare that it requires investigation in males, so your dad may have more of a problem than you do.

There is also a condition called 'honeymoon cystitis' this is not an infection, but is due to the trauma and bruising which occurs in those unused to regular intercourse. It is is important to find out if your symptoms are due to infection or not, firstly because bacterial urinary infections should probably always be treated with antibiotics, and left they may result in kidney damage, and secondly unexplained recurrent urinary infections in women also need to be investigated in case they are due to an underlying anatomical abnormality.

Bacterial urine infections may settle with time and plenty of fluids, ( nothing special about cranberry juice by the way! ) They should however be treated or you may risk renal scarring or more rarely pyelonephritis which may give rise to septicaemia!

No it doesn't go away on its own. Make sure you take all your antibiotics. I used to get Cystitis regularly and would keep a couple of pills back each time 'for the next time'. (It was SOOO painful) When my GP found out what I'd been doing he gave me a dreadful telling-off. 'Do you want this to travel up to your kidneys and give you complications in later life you stupid woman?!!' He was really scary. He gave me a prescription for the biggest tablets you've ever seen in your life and told me that I WOULD take them ALL wouldn't I. 'Yes doctor' I said, very meekly. They were horrible to swallow and I'm sure it was deliberate to teach me a lesson - but they did the trick and I've never had it since. Go to your doctor and get some proper treatment. Don't just visit the hospital - that's for emergencies, not for prescriptions. You may be getting immune from all the antibiotics so you need sorting out NOW before it all becomes chronic.

You need antibiotics and the doctor told me to pee after sex as that can flush out the infection before it starts i get cystitis and each time i needed antibiotics. Also perfumeed soap can cause it so i was told to use a simple soap with no perfum.I haven't had it for some time now. Hope that helps x

I've just had a bout of Cystitis myself - it's very uncomfortable so I really sympathise with you!

If it occurs with such regularity, it may be a good idea to see a doctor again and suggest that you are put on a different antibiotic - it could be that your body carries some bacteria which are resitant to the one you've been using.

I only suggest this because my doctor prescribed me with a different kind of antibiotic after the original one did not fully clear up my symptoms :)

No, it won't go away naturally. It's a bacterial infection. To prevent it, make sure that you and your lover wash well before sex. Take a shower together if you like. You didn't say if you're male or female. But if your lover is male, then he should be careful to wash himself, especially if he is not circumcized--bacteria can get caught under there, and while it might not bother him, it will multiply within you and make you sick.

You poor thing. It's a miserable condition.

Cystopurin - the best. Buy it at the chemist.

Cranberry juice can help relieve the symptoms, and drunk every day can go a long way to halting the onset of the symptoms.

Cleanliness is essential, before and after sex, for both of you, especially as you seem to be one of the unlucky ones who is more prone to this infection.
