Factors for newbie techie to consider:
1. Ease of use- Will I be able to figure out how to do normal things: (e.g. connecting to internet. checking email, making documents.right?)
2. Does this computer come with Microsoft Office or do I need to buy it seperately? (if your getting a PC get the Microsoft Office suite that has Microsoft Publisher, Publisher you can use to make greeting cards and stuff it is soooooo handy to have)
3. Will the company help me out if my computer crashes? What features help against the computer crashing? Especially on PCs computer crashes are inevitable. Even on a Mac make sure you are a member to some type of customer service. You can ask all the questions you want about your new computer and its also handy when you want to know how to do something.
4. How much money am I willing to spend on a computer? The budget outlines:
$500 or less: Get either a Linux computer or a cheap PC and put Linux on it. Linux runs pretty nice and usually its free or just shipping fees. A good Linux laptop is ASUS EEE PC at $400. (Don't worry about Microsoft word on Linuxes I hear Open Office. org is a pretty good alternative)
$500-$1000- Get a Lenovo Thinkpad PC since they are awesome and come with great features and good customer support.
$1000+ Get a Mac they are awesome and easy to use and don't get viruses. You have to buy Microsoft Office seperately.

Best bet: Get a Mac if you can since they are the easiest to use, have a lot of cool features. Get a Lenovo if you want a PC.
Good luck! Happy Holidays!

u said u want it for normal use.
so wat is ur budget? if money is no problem buy the latest one on the market. it will give u high performance and even after 2-3 yrs it wont be so obsolet. but if u think u dont want for that long and only need for a current use go for a cheap one.
if u ask for brand name these are in the descending order interms of reliability.apple mac>sony>hp>dell>toshiba>acer and others.
u should look for these basic features to give atleast a 20 months good performance. if u go lower than these, after 15 months they will look like desktops.1gb ram, double core duo, centrino mobile, pentium, dvd burner 100 gb hd.
dont buy larger than 14". people usually fall for larger one only to repent later. laptops are supposed to be laptops and mobile. wt should be arould 5lb at max. and dont forget to buy norton antivirus. it will save u lot of money and time. and buy warranty too if it doesnt come with the purchase.
in all at around 1grand u should be able to get a modest laptop. if u can affford, my suggestion is go for around 1200-1300. but anythiing more than that is just waste of money

best of luck
and dont forget to post wat u got after u but it

But you should take the at least three years extended warranty so that you need not to worry for the maintenance.
You should also bye genuine OS.
