I now have to wear a suit to work. I have a few but I have put on some pounds since I last wore them. The suits are in great condition, but they fit a bit tight around my tummy. Can a tailor somehow alter the suit one size bigger? I'm a size 44 and the jackets are size 42. Can this be done?

You won't know untill you open up the seams. And don't do it yourself. Since you only need 1 size change it won't be too hard. Most clothes with a lining have a 1/2" of material, or seam allowance at the side and back seams which means your jacket can be let out at the side seams and back seams by as much as 1/2" per seam leaving 1/4" on all 3 seams for a seam allowance. This would give your jacket 1-1/2" of extra room.

take them to a tailor and see if their is enough fabric in the seams to take out. Meanwhile buy 1 new suit and wear it with different shirts and ties until you lose the extra pounds.

If there is enouhg material at the seams, maybe.
Cheaper to buy a new one, or try a used clothing shop. I've given away excellent clothing at death, or when I've outgrown them.
