"Ibn al-Haytham: First Scientist" by Bradley Steffens tells the fascinating, true story of a medieval Muslim scholar who overcame bouts of mental illness to develop the scientific method. It was just chosen by California Readers to be part of the 2008 California Collection. You can find reviews of the book and a sample chapter at http://www.ibnalhaytham.net/

I have the same problem you do. You could always do what I always do and read the first couple of pages in the book before you start reading them. that will give you an insight into what they will be like. it always helps me.
I don't know what you are really into or what you have already read, but when I was twelve I absolutely loved the Dear America Series. They were Historically acurate and really reads. My absolute favorite one was "Standing in the light: the captive diary of Catherine Carey Logan." But the rest were just as good.
You could also always go to a high school teacher in your area and get a reading list from them. this way you are one up when you get to High School. It's what I did, and not only did I love the books that I read, but I didn't have to reread them and I had more time during school to focus on other things.
hope this helped and I hope you find something you want to read.

How about "The Hobbit" and the three books "Lord of the Rings" After that you could read all the Tom Clancy series, Harry Potter, The Dune series, If you like stories of the sea - the Hornblower books. Then there are the works of Mark Twain,. Grapes of Wrath, East of Eden, Cannery Row, How about the stories by Robert Lewis Stevenson: Kidnapped, Treasure Island.
If you wade through all of these, ask again and you can have another list. The books listed above will take about 1 to 2 years to read assuming you do so regularly.

I'm also an avid reader, and there are some reall great books I discovered at your age that are still my favorite books three years later!
I'd recommend "The Giver", by Lois Lowry, and also "Gathering Blue", by the same author. I read them when I turned twelve, and fell in love with them.
My favorite book of all time is "Life of Pi", about a boy from India who must survive on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger. It's a really beautiful book, and I can read it over and over again without getting bored.
A really hilarious book that has a lot of British humor in it, but is also really interesting philosophically, is "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", by Douglas Adams. My 11-year-old sister is reading it, and thinks it's a lot of fun.
Good luck finding some fun books to read!
