Do you want the scientific reason?
The U.K. is under the influence of the northern polar front. It means that if it rains, there is 70% chances that it will be sun the day after, and if it is sun, 70% that it will rain the day after. That's because it takes about one day for a low pressure to give way to a high ridge, then a low again - since lows are moving at about 20 knots, taken by the Jetstreams.
But, at the average of three times a year, and for reasons not yet fully understood, the Jetstreams are becoming so weak that a stable and persisting high pressure forms over northern Europe. Usually it is in June/july, September/October and January/February. While the first gives nice warm weather, the second gives what we call the 'Indian summer' the third gives a very cold weather because the sun is so low over the horizon that more heat is lost at night that it can be gained during daytime.
... What you got in the U.K. (and I got in Norway) was exactly that, only that this year, it came in December.
Furthermore, since the surface radiates so much heat, the ground is colder than up above. A few days ago, I checked it and while we had -6 on the ground, the temperature was +5 at 5,000 feet of altitude! That creates an inversion (the air is not rising) and you get fog. With the temperature under freezing point, you get ... freezing fog, and that is probably what you also had this week.
For me, a light airplane pilot, it means: No fly! Two other pilots didn't listen and went flying last week; they went down and crashed. No casualities but the airplanes are totally destroyed. You see, ice builds on the wings and the propeller and you loose power and lift.

Laffing hard @ the guy with Tony Blair, but hey, it's sunny here too, i think we should learn to love the rain also.. It depends on the plans you have for the day/halfday.. if you just don't match with the weather, it can suck at times. We must get used to it. Feel good when it rains.. see the Tony Blair guy?! He doesnt care if it rains.. i'm sure about that.
