Just to keep their main batsmen safe. But i am against this night watchman thing. A proper batsman should play instead of a dummy

A nightwatchman job is to play the last 15 mins or so and only to defend his wicket by any means possible and not bother about scoring runs, a good nightwatchman like Mohammad Sami of Pakistan plays 80 to 90 balls only scoring 15 to 20 runs...Even if his wicket is lost its not a big loss for the team

Good question. Night watchmen usually have a good defensive technique, take Jason Gillespie for example who used to be night watchman for Australia, and are only there for a couple of overs at most. I think the theory is that even if he does get out, at least he's wasted a little time so the specialist has to play the least number of deliviries.

To save the wkt of the specialist batsmen....for the next day.
To frustrate the bowlers thinking it will be easy to take his wkt.
It is all mind games and it has become a tradition....
A Nightwatchman needs to play safe and his role is vital to
next day's game.

In the last 10 - 15 overs bowling team will try their best.. and if they see specialist batsman they will jump upon him like hungry dogs.. it will be very difficult to handle that pressure.. also the ligjt will be fading and their is a chance that batsman can miss fast bowl.. so its very risky.. to avoid this they send the tail ender he will not have that much pressure..

a tailenders wicket cost much than a specialist batsman's,thats why they send night watctchman when there is 5 or 6 overs left to play. But there r conditons where night watchman helped his team to build a decent score....recently indian spinner anil kumble scored his maiden century

see night batsmen r sent when only 30 mins or less r left. their is no need of taking risks and getting out cheaply therefore they can come in the morning and make their runs
