With the news that one of the UK's largest independent butchers is closing:

and the report last month which directly links eating sausages, bacon and ham with cancer of the colon (in much the same way that smoking was linked to lung cancer back in the 1950s), is it now the case that people are moving away from eating meat to a more healthy diet of fruit, vegetables and fish?

The problem isn't the meat -it's the way it's processed and the additives used, that are linked with cancer.

It's not necessarily healthier to eat fruit and veg either, because the pesticides on fruit and veg are linked with cancer too.

It would be great if research such as this made people buy more organic food, then manufacturers would have to change the way our food is produced.

Oh, I hope not. But because of my religion, I didn't eat pork products for many years. Maybe there's something in those old biblical laws after all.
PS I should imagine the reasons butchers are shutting down is the same reason greengrocers are shutting down. The rise of the supermarkets.

I wouldn't think meat can cause such diseases the only thing that is stopping people from eating meat is cost.
Once the big supermarkets took over the price skyrocketed and now we literally need to put a beautiful roast on labye to have such a treat.
I used to always look for young spring lamb "no such thing now" so we eat more chicken and, fish pensioners can hardly afford meat

I haven't eaten meat for about 25 years tho I do eat fish and shellfish. There's no particular reason for it. I always cooked meat for my kids if they wanted it.

I don't think people will ever give up meat entirely but I do think there has been a swing away from red meat towards poultry.

No I know a lot of meat eaters and I am one of them.
They may not cook meat as they used to, but a lot of products (warm ups) containing meat are still being eaten.
Personally I love meat and I also love fruit vegetables and fish. if I dont eat meat, i start to feel a bit weak!
We actually have canine teeth so it is natural for us to eat meat.
But if you want to be a veggie, thats ok as well I have friends who are both meat eaters and veggie. We all get along. Seasons Greetings!

Independent butchers can't compete with the big Supermarkets, so it's probably got Little to do with eating habits and more to do with shopping habits.

It certainly is.

I gave up eating meat (but not fish) a few months ago and I have felt so much better for it.

You can also still eat 'meat' products which are healthy. It is called quorn:

meat a thing of the past? no, not in my lifetime. i think people will always smoke, eat meat, take drugs, drink alcohol, and have unprotected sex. because that's the way we are, "risk takers". personally i only do three of the above "sins". lol.
