It's ancient, discontinued and about ready to fall off the door. I haven't been able to find a replacement that fits. Everything I've found so far is off by fractions of an inch.

I need one 11x15 inches. That's the size of the flap itself, the molding is another inch all around.

The whole doggie door can't be replaced because the door it's in is also ancient and discontinued. I'm afraid that cutting into it will make it fall apart. I'd have to have a custom people door installed, then cut the doggie door, and that's just too expensive right now.

I need clever ways to rig a flap that keeps out the weather, but allows the dog (Lab mix. 65 pounds) access.

I live in Northern California, so no snow. The door leads out into a covered patio. I'm mainly concerned with having a gaping hole in my door, (mid winter) and letting in insects and other undesirables.

Any ideas would be great, thank you.

The dog is also old.

She can't go all day (while we're gone) without a bathroom break, and it's too cold for her old bones to leave her outside.

To Lisa S:

They make replacement flaps.
Google "doggie doors".
I found lots of flaps, just none that will fit my door.

I hope this helps. The doors I've priced are expensive. To expensive to replace twice a year. LOL!

Good luck.

A rubber mat... the kind they sell for a few bucks to lay at your front door. ( welcome mat) there are hundreds of different styles, thicknesses and materials out there. You're not going to want a thick one , just a thin one with smooth rubber on one side and maybe green felt on the other. If that doesn't work for you how about a cheap place mat ( table setting) surly you can fine one big enough to cut square at 11x15. Good luck hope this helps.

Dog Door Replacement Flap

Cowboy Doc offers a valid suggestion, I'll just add my 2 cents.

First of all I can't know your thoughts on exterior aesthetics, but here goes.

Is there some sort of framework in the area of the current utility, within the door structure itself? If so, .........................

The breed sounds like this FLAP must near to half the height of the door. I'd probably try something similar to "Bar doors/ Kitchen passage way doors" Restaurant kitchen passage way doors/ that use two way self closing door hinges, perhaps even crafted from a substantial sheet of Plexi, allowing the dog both In and Out.

Old door or not is it a solid core? Perhaps the hinges could be mounted within the door cut out, or on the exterior as long a the allow the IN push?

One way is to remove doggie door. Cover opening with a lager piece of wood about 1/2" thick or so. This can be framed in with molding that goes along with door molding. This will have to be done on both sides. Then insert doogie door in new piece of wood. The out come will depend on the skills of person doing the job. An experienced carpenter can do a nice job in a couple hours. Painting the whole door afterward will allow everything to blend in. This should work until and new door can be purchased. Good luck.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://biturl.im/aU8v9

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.
