An empty mind is a devil's workshop and most of social scientists don't know what to do but take on fancy projects over which thousands of their man hours are spent with matching monetary grants. To justify their work, they then come out with theories and results which most people already know either from their elders or had a fairly good idea about them except jargons or difficult terms.Your example of girl's preference is a good case to illustrate their research.

Most scientists don't study things like that. I'm betting you haven't read what the scientist wrote and instead have just accepted the summary or excerpt some journalist has provided. Remeber that the journalist gets paid based on how many people they can attract to read their material. Scientists have to convince someone with money to give it to them so they can go and figure something out.
