For my grandmother who was 97 at the time, I found an old picture of her 3 kids when they were young, had it blown up and framed it . She cried when she saw it...it had been years and years since she had looked at the old photos. It was a hit with everyone because they hadn't seen the picture either.
Good idea too Chocolate!!!!

Perhaps he is an old movie buff...or a John Wayne fan, they sell sets in all the stores and they can also be ordered on line... Music also would be a suggestion as well as a set of books he may like! Perhaps a larger print Bible! Maybe a cigarette case engraved with his initials along with a lighter!
Just some ideas!

Sent him a picture of yourself and a letter telling him how special he is to you and, letting him know you love him and wishing you could be with him on this blessed day called Christmas. If you don't have a picture, the letter would be perfect. At 87 he doesn't need much and certainly not cigarettes.Love is always to perfect gift regardless of age.

Get a pet that can stay with you until it is time for your granddad to visit your house. He will enjoy a dog or cat.
Or, if he is still able to read o.k., consider a book that interests him....you say he watches the news a lot.....maybe a book about international events throughout the years, or a subscription to a magazine like Time or Newsweek. Or, a nice cigarette ashtray, since he smokes so much, and probably won't stop, at his age. Or, a nice robe with slippers to match. (old folks get colder than young ones and need to stay warmer) So, a robe or a blanket for his bed.......other ideas....some nice towels for his bathroom, or a bed/sheet set, or a new mattress, or even a Tempurepedic mattress cover (he will love it....will sleep like a baby, and wake with less stiffness or pain).....or get him a watch, if you think he will use it.

My father is 95. I compiled a series of old black and white photos I got off the internet of the town he and his parents moved to in the 1920's. This was from Massachusetts to California. Another year I sent him a book about his hometown. I think he appreciated these two presents more than anything else I had ever given him.
He is now a great great grandfather. (He is also a Great father!)

Well since he is 87, he is going to need something to help keep him warm. Get him some fur lined slippers/house shoes, gloves, a throw to cover his lap and legs, flannel pajamas, thermal underwear, flannel shirts, anything that will be able to help him stay warm.
My dad is 84, that is what I do for him, I give him stuff that will keep him warm. The older you get the harder it is to stay warm, at least that is the way it is with my dad.

All the suggestions here are great - I can't add anything, but bless you for your caring heart. Whatever you give him, can't be any better than your kind thoughts. Best wishes for a very happy Christmas !

yah know, at that age too. i seriously think the impossible would be needed, that is, get as many kids, daughters, grandkids, etc, as you can, and take a family picture. with him included, if you can't, build a montage, a collection of all his family, collect pictures, frame it , hang it , show it.
short of that , throw him a party, bring all the relatives over, for no special reason. make sure you clean up, make him the guest of honor, and take some pictures, he won't be around long, his pictures will,
