greatest modern invention i think is electricity.
I think this is what really separated ancient technology from modern ones. The ancients were really quite advanced if you've studied history and had a lot of workarounds for devices that does similar things that we have now except without the need for electricity.

Ability to make fire with getting it from nature. Without that nothing else in modern technology would be possible. Second would be the phonetically based written language and then the printing press.
