I assume that "short trip" will be for about 3 to 4 days or so.

If you like sea-side places:

Visit Alibaug. There are plenty of options available and am damn sure that though you may have visited Alibag for few times, you have still to explore so much there.

Visit village Sasawane. It's between Mandwa jetty and Alibag town. About 6 kms on your right while coming from jetty. A very beautiful exhibition of old sculptures by renowned artist and nice green environment. You can stay at "bed and breakfast" of Ravi Apte ( just behind the exhibition). Nice people and bang adjucent to the beach.

From there ( treat Ravi Apte's place as base ), you can visit an old, seaside fort ( 14th century) at Korlai. At this place, King Shivaji started production of canons for the first time. You can touch and see several canons even today. You must visit the modern lighthouse at the base of the fort. Entry Fee Rs.5/- per person. The people there can give you lots of info about lighthouses, ports, ships etc. Interesting!! Enroute you can visit several old temples in Chaul and Revdanda.

Visit the "breakwater" pier in Thal Village ( Koliwada ). Unique thing. Ask for the directions.

Visit "Satada" beach, near Akshi. It's actually a " no crowds" beach. Plus you get excellent options for etables ( if you love fishes ). If you love quiet and lonely places, visit this beach.

Murud and Janjira areas are bit far-off but within your range. Enroute if you take a left turn and climb the road, you may visit Phansad sanctuary ( lots of deers and few panthers ).

Hope these many options are sufficient.

Enjoy urself!!

You can visit many places near Mumbai and within Mumbai. You can visit places like Alibaug, Mandwa (Near Alibaug), Kashid Beach and Murud Janjira (again near Alibaug). You can go to Karnala Bird Sanctuary and many other forts for 1-2 days picnic. Also, you can visit Elephanta Caves.

A one day trip I assume:
Elephanta
Khandala, Matheran - but they might be colder. This is not their real season
A one day Hike to Karla-bhaja Caves and/or Lohagad Visapur forts. take a train to Malavali (between Mumabai-pune for Bhaja and Lohagad) or by road to Karla. All of these are close by if you have own car.
SL world
Pavai lake
