Because if people weren't straight, people wouldn't exist. You need a mother and a father to continue the species.
When most people look at a man or a woman they are automatically subconsciously judging them in terms of competition vs mate potential.
When men see other men they'll first notice their stature, apparent strength etc. They're looking at them to judge the competition.
When men see a woman they're looking for clues to her fertility (much of what is classes as attractive is typical in more fertile women).
Homosexuality is an oddity in that it doesn't serve any purpose in reproduction, and therefore no purpose in continuing the species.
Since people judge others in terms of competition vs mate potential, they subconsciously assume everyone else is involved in the mating game. If there's no clues to hint towards the fact that the person is gay, the potential competition/mate mindsight will translate over into how they consciously act or talk towards them.

I think it has to do with the fact that 90%+ people are straight and think they are normal. This doesn't mean I disagree with you. I think that sexuality and homosexuality will be more and more excepted in the years to come and it will not be as much of an issue. Just look at the last 50 years. Things are changing for the better for all mankind.

Not all gay people come out. Some are so, so explicitly gay (hold hands, hug, kiss romantically a person of the same sex )they never have to say a word to let the world know they are gay. Same with straight people, if they're constantly seen hugging and kissing with a person of the opposite sex then it is assumed they are straight.

It's just because up until the last few years, it was assumed we were alls straight. I mean, there has always been gay people, but because of the views of society...because it is something different...gay people hid it for fear of being judged.
Besides, I don't know many people who are gay that ever needed to come out of the closet. It was kind of obvious. I think others usually could tell before you know for yourself

Why do people feel the need to "come out" in the first place?
Your sexual preference is something that should be private as it's not something we do out in public (unless of course we live in Amsterdam)

Assuming you mean sexual orientation I don't believe anyone, heterosexual bisexual or homosexual should have to "come out".
As the song goes, "ain't nobodys business but my own"
I think its a personal thing and we shouldn't even ask or want to know.
Unless you plan to go to bed with the person.

It's much more common for people to be straight (and by "be straight", I really mean "think that they're straight"), so if someone is making an assumption, which they usually are, they go for the default.
