I think that a lot of people in the "Senior" category, had grandparents who died fairly young. Going back over 50 years ago, the average life-span was much less than it is today.

I'm 58, lost both my grandfathers very young due to war, and I never knew them at all. My grandmothers died when I was 8 and 17 respectively, and since the longest-lived one lived in Canada, and we were in Australia, I only knew her slightly.

I always thought it would have been nice to have the sorts of relationships with family that others had, but it didn't happen. I made up for that when I had a family of my own, and now I'm enjoying being a grandma to our dear little 2 year old grand-daughter.

All of my grandparents have passed on. My grandpa and grandma on my dad's side passed on many years ago. I can't remember his death very well, but I do recall some what of my grandma passing away.
My grandpa on mom's side dies some time back, he passed on after my step grandpa did. Both of these died after dad lost both of his parents. My grandma on mom's side passed away in Dec of 2004. I remember that one very well. As a matter of fact, I remember my grandparents on mom's side very well. As far as my grandma on mom's side, she was the best! Very smart woman to say the least. Spoke her mind in a nice way. I remember all the get "togethers" that we always had at her house. She made the best chicken and noodles that I ever ate in my life, the noodles were made from scratch to!

As time went on for grandma, she ended up living with my parents until the day that she passed away. That was a very sad day for our whole family. She is and will be missed greatly.

Don't get me wrong, I miss all of my grandparents, but she was the last one to go so there for the memories of her are the freshest ones.

They died before I was born. Only had a grandpa for my first few years in life. My memories of him are the ones in his open casket! No one ever spoke well of him, for some reason. They are all dead now too, so I guess I'll never know the story behind all those "family secrets" that followed them from their homelands to American soil! They all had extremely difficult & complex lives & they helped to build this country by working hard to keep their freedom!

My father's father (grandfather) was Joseph and I am named after him, which means he passed away before I was born. My father's mother (grandmother) also passed away before I was born. However, I know from my father that they were good people and he was extremely close to his mother.

Now my mother's parents (my grandparents) I did know, but when I was young, I didn't show an interest in them - I didn't think about them and now I feel quite sad about this loss. My grandfather owned a grocery store and he used to give the food to the people whether or not they paid and many times they never paid. He was a very kind hearted person.

My grandmother (poor soul) was traumatized when she left her family in Russia behind to marry my grandfather. She felt very guilty leaving them, but the family told her to go and build a new life in America, which she did. However, my grandmother did not adapt so well to life in America and mainly she communicated with her daughter (my mother).

So basically, I feel that I and my grandparents did not connect and communicate as well and as much as we could have. I am sorry that it turned out this way, but I just have to accept it now.

This question caused me to pause and really think about my answer. For the past couple of years I have become increasingly aware that I am aging (I'm not obcessed with this...but I am aware of my aging process.) With this increased awareness, I realize that I am approaching the age of my grandparents (the age I always picture my grandparents)....the veil between "us" and "them" is becoming thinner and I am slowly coming to realize that I am my grandparents. To talk about them, is to talk about myself. Because of this revelation, I feel increasingly connected to my grandparents but I don't seem to have the desire to tell the "remember when" stories. All of this may be a little too "deep" but these are the thoughts that this question provoked.

That's true. That subject just doesn't come up here. I have very fond memories of mine as well. It is my ambition to leave fond memories for my grandchildren, which, by the natural order of things, could be in 2 to 5 years.

I have spoken of my grandparents in this forum before. I loved them all. I learned a lot from them and miss being "spoiled" by them. Mt mom's mom lived with us until I was 10, then we moved and she would visit us in the winter. My dad's mom, lived at my house after my 2nd son was born.
