It ended the whole grunge thing and gave way to bands such as backstreet boys, spice girls, N*SYnc, britney spears, etc.
if he hadnt killed himself mayb these emerging pop acts would not have gotten as big as they did, changing the whole tide of music to a much more poppy sound.
wow ppl just because you personally didnt like kurt cobain doesnt mean that smells like teen spirit has no right to be #1 on VH1's countdown.;
and yes to the person above the Mrs. Carden does stand for Mike Carden of TAI..

I liked Nirvana, but I personally feel that they are much more respected because of the death of Kurt Cobain. As I recall, Pearl Jam was more popular and respected...and they have faded into obscurity. If Kurt Cobain hadn't died we probably wouldn't even be having this conversation right now.

I often ask myself that question regarding to many artsts. Johnathan Larson- composer of Rent , Kurt Cobain, Elliott Smith, even Motzart. Imagine how the world would be and how much more we would have in our lives if these single people lived a few more years. Well we may never know how he would have changed music..maybe would have advocated more drug usuage to the world, or maybe brought great music. Well we will never know....this shows the dark side of drugs and suicide. We need to be aware of these things.

Not much, if anything, got people to give up the heroin. I am sorry, but I think Nirvana is the most over-rated band of all time. I watched VH1's top 100 songs of the 1990's. I CANNOT BELIEVE PEOPLE VOTED "SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT" #1. There is no way that song was better than any of these rock songs Under the Bridge, Suck My Kiss, November Rain, Soul to Squeeze, Jeremy, One, Blackhole Sun, Come Out and Play (keep em separated), or The Kids Arent Alright. NO WAY...

don't even try to suggest that Kurt Cobain left a mark other than a chaulk line around his body. That would be a first... for any looser to kill himself for no better reason and then be in the music hall of fame... you need better role models in your life if you admire someone like that

No not really but he was a pretty good artist. People loved his music and that is why teen spirt was voted #1. I saw the list as well I think that teen spirt should have been top ten but not number one.
