It is okay to sit a baby on you lap but my health centre gives out information that says you shouldn't place a baby in a sitting position on the floor(static sitting) with pillows etc. to support them. Babies are supposed to discover how to sit up themselves(dynamic sitting) at their own pace. It's not because it hurts them but because they don't have the balance necessary to be safe.

Before the age of three months, a baby should lie flat while in a pram. After that, he/she can 'sit' in a reclined position. While you are holding your baby, any position that is comfortable for the two of you is fine. You can safely support him/her in a sitting or standing position, provided you give the required amount of support. Always be careful to support your baby's head and neck until he/she can do it independently.

I've never heard that. As long as you have some support under their arms when they are really little. How else would they learn to sit by themselves if you never put them in the position? I would prop my son up in his boppy sitting up before he could do it himself and while he was learning i would surround him by pillows for when he fell over. I dont think it will hurt their spine.

Never heard of that. I did hear not to let my kids stand up before they are "ready". Well, my son was doing it all the time starting 3 months and walking by 10. My daughter is 2 1/2 months and LOVES to stand! She giggles so much

never heard of it. in fact, my doctor (and every baby book I've read) encourages holding the baby in an upright, sitting position in order to help him/her learn to sit on their own. Otherwise, like another reply said, how else would they learn?

They have to be in the position at some point to gain the muscle control to be able to do it on their own. You just have to help support the baby's neck until he/she's strong enough to do that on their own.
