It would be very interesting to imagine a world where the first to circumnavigate the globe were not also hell bent on conquering the inhabitants of the world. Of course the drive to go forth and discover has often been driven by conquest and greed for riches, but say the people were conqestors but didn't have the disease spreading influence which wiped out the Native Americans? How would the Aztec empire and other peoples have progressed without nearly the entire population being descimated with disease. Or if the timing had been different in Africa and it was not also so easily invaded and divided. It would probably be a much more culturally rich world and not so lopsided.

Without the Europeans blocking the way, the Islamic Middle East may have been the dominant world power. They were already trading along the east coast of Africa and moving into India, to the Atlantic coast of Africa and into the East Indies long before the European colonial period. So, no Renaissance?

The Aztec and Inca Empire may or may not still exist. The Ottoman Empire still exists. The Manchus may or may not still control China. The planet looks about the same way it did in the 1300s, except gunpowder is more widespread.

Alternately the Renaissance may have happened somewhere else instead, probably somewhere in the Middle East. In which case the Muslims would probably be ruling the world.

Man would still be struggling to overcome some form of human development or other. Just as he is now. Would the problems that offset human development be any less of an urgent contradiction to be resolved had not the Europeans overcome their own racial problems much less thinking that this is particular to the Caucasians and no one else of other racial orders... hm.
