In my area, I would say, yes, there are fewer decorations this year. There are still a few people, however, that went whole-hog with very elaborate displays.
As to why this may be, I think there may be 3 factors.
First, the concerted effort of the ACLU and atheists to stamp out Christmas these past few years. I still will not shop at Target, Kmart, or Walmart since they refused to say "Merry Christmas" to us. What did they think we were shopping for? It's our holiday-without us, there would be no reason to have Christmas sales. Christian money is just as green as non-Christian money, and I choose not to spend it there.
Second, the downturn in the economy this year--many people are feeling the pinch, and not spending money on frivolities.
Third, the fear of Muslims--houses that are too decorated will be identified as Christian, hence the enemy they have vowed to kill, so many aren't celebrating Christmas too much. So, shopping is down, and stores have had to offer fabulous discounts to lure shoppers.

In answer to your question .... much less as I never get to go anywhere! And, when I do it's in daylight hours so there are no lights then. I'm sorry not to be seeing them, I'm sorry I don't feel like going out and enjoying the season. Being in pain all the time is awful and takes the heart out of you, definitely takes the get up and go out of you! This is the first year I've not done a thing as far as decorations goes... sad but true.

During the 50's and 60's it was a ritual to put them up. Since the 70's it became chore , by the 80's it got to where punks would come by while I was at work and steal the strings of light's. Now, why bother ? Business' in my area also quit decorating since every religious group would boycott their business 'cause their faith wasn't exhibited . With 4,600 different organized religions , you can't make them all happy so ,why bother ?

Less ? Not around my neighbourhood ! If anything, it is more decorative than ever. My block of units has 5 levels, and the top three levels on both sides are bedecked with lights of all descriptions. Our balcony is draped with flashing lights like lace...our upstairs neighbour has Rudolph running back and forth ! I love all of this !
Last night, we took a sick friend out of hospital, to have a special dinner. We went to a mutual friend's house on a canal near us. Every house within our view, was dressed to the 9's with lights - it was like fairyland. All the time we were sitting there, boats of every size were sailing up and down the canal, many with red and green lights decorating them. We kept having to turn my friend's chair around, so she could see all the boats as they came along. At one point, the Coast Guard boat came along, with a lone piper standing in the stern, piping a lovely tune. It was a wonderfully atmospheric moment. Even a flock of canoes came along, each with a light at either end, bobbing along ....we kept on waving as all these boats sailed past us, and the sailors waved back. An evening to remember.
Every year, around November, I think that I definitely won't go to any trouble at Christmas....but every year, I am entranced by all the beautiful things that people do to spread cheer to others. Its a great time of the year, even in broiling hot Australia !

yes it reminds me of the early seventies when the energy crisis and the govt wanted ever one to cut back -- i think in my area it was caused (1) by the bad weather --cold rain and snow (2) cost of everything i.e. electric and the decorations themselves (3) and the folks who really went hog wild have just got one year older -- i know number 3 played a big part on our farm -- i asked my sister who always headed i up the project if she wanted to drag the stuff out and she said no -- it the kids wanted to do it let them --- so the stuff is still in the attic!!! hate to say this but i have a feeling it will not be moved again till sis dies and we start cleaning stuff out!!!

Yes. However, I must admit, we have new young families in the neighborhood so some of the homes previously sold that did nothing have families now that do. That made me feel so good. Our street use to look so bleak at Christmas.

I haven't seen any decrease in the amount of decorations this year at all. With all the talk about global warming and power plants using fossil fuels, I would think people would curtail the fabulous light displays.

No. We just drove by all of our usual places.....the ones we knew are always decorated.....and, they did not disappoint us with their display of lights. I have actually seen alot more of the blow up decorations this year.I had thought about getting one of those Santas on the motorcycles myself, but I was afraid an Indiana wind would blow him away. LOL Merry Christmas!

Yes far less...I just cannot believe it in my area. I thought maybe some was just waiting until the last week but that wasn't the case. We are now two days away.

Our town and houses have gone all out this year it seems. One night not long ago I had to go out for something and was really amazed at all the lights and scenery. Really makes it feel Chrismasy!
