Read the site below. states population might surprise you.

Smallest by population:

1. Wyoming 515,004
2. Vermont 623,908
3. North Dakota 635,867
4. Alaska 670,053

So if you play with the numbers you can make them say any thing you want. Alaska has the fewest people per square mile, but when it comes to benefits from the federal government, Alaska gets more than the three states with a lower population.

I included states by area so you could compare people per square mile. There's a cute map of the US and an Alaska overlay showing how large Alaska is.
