I was a student whose spending money was quite meager then but I saved enough of it to buy my mother a dark green set of dinner plates, mugs and platters that I saw on a shop window everytime I walked to and from the bus stop.
I didn't realize that it was very heavy. I decided to bring it home for Christmas and took it on the plane with me. It got more and more heavy by the minute as I waited on line. I t would not fit into the overhead cabinets after much help by other passengers so it was very embarrassing as the plane crew tried to help accommodate and decide where my plates would go.

The nice ending was that Mom loved them and so did the rest of my family. But I still get embarrassed when I think about all the fuss it caused.

My father is a very ecentric individual, who usually shops for himself only twice a year: The week before his birthday and the week before christmas. We dont know why he does this, he says he "Forgets". But its makes it difficult to come up with functional gift ideas. So 3 years ago, i was flipping through a catalog. Searching for ANYTHING zaney and creative, yet functional for my father. And there... in the Wine Enthusiast catalog (dont know why i get that one, i dont drink wine).... Was a Mushroom log! you soak it water and leave it in a dark, cool place... and in 3 weeks its sproats shitake mushrooms you can eat! it was functional (he eats mushrooms!) and it was zaney... and it was TOTALLY orignal. I was thrilled. (i think its still in the box in his pantry.. but whatever!)
