This isn't really something that can be answered in this forum. Most of us with Ph.D.s took multiple courses on exactly this subject.

The fundamental is to have an idea preferably it should be your original idea. Next study the literature already existing relevant to your idea, study the positive and negative pros and cons and theoretical possibility to accomplish it, formulate an experiment, collect and analyse the data, and it's mathematical expression, and see the results as they are. Take care of all the ethical issues of research and beware of intellectual piracy by patenting your idea before you let anyone else know about it
