It was actually a tradition that my husband, son and I started about 4 years ago. Christmas day is just so hectic...running around to all of the parents and grandparents houses that we really couldn't enjoy it.
It has worked out well for us. It is something that we look forward to now every year! I always thought people who did this were nuts... but now I see why they do it.

As long as I remember we have opened up our gifts from my parents at their home Christmas Eve. Now that I have my own family my kids open their gifts Christmas Eve still from their grandparents and aunt, and open the other gifts Christmas morning. It is a bit weird but that's the way we were brought up, don't know why really. I prefer Christmas morning to open.

My husband's family do. They are from the north of Scotland (Orkney and Shetland actually) and many traditions there are Scandinavian. I think it is nice actually. You have all the family presents then, and when there are kids we still have Santa presents on Christmas morning. Some of us keep a tradition of having stockings on Christmas morning. It spreads everything out nicely and on Christmas it becomes more about family, the meal and reflection.
Although I joke that I married my husband just so I could open my presents 12 hours early!

I found out my girlfriend was an only child when we shared our first Christmas together. At the age of 26, she was still getting away with murder. Her story was this- you open a not very big present Christmas eve, then another at 12 as it is officially Christmas day, then all the others providing it's after 6am! I thought she was joking...she wasn't.
Personally, never before, and the person who got you the present has to be there-that is just me though. What I really love to do is not open them for ages and all day long she says gonna open them now? I say, yeah when I'm ready. When it gets to 4 pm there is veins bulging from her head and eyes filled with blood-it is only then when I fear for my own safety I open then.
Another thing I do is tell her what the present is before I open it-I'm REALLY good at that and it drives her wild! I promised not to do it this year...but after a bucks fizz or two, who knows!

My husband is a firefighter and frequently has to work on Christmas day. So we have our Christmas on Christmas Eve. And if he's not we have a tradition of letting the kids open one present, and then when they go to bed My husband and I take some time and open our gift to each other. Let's us focus on the kids in the morning and gives us a chance to have some much needed one on one time.

usually we get to open 1 or 2, maybe 3 on Christmas Eve. 1 from the parents, and 1 or 2, if they're small or go together, from aunt/cousin/grandparents.

My family normally opened one, but I shouldn't get more than one present this year, so I will wait. Unfortunately, I already know what I got myself.
