I think it could be the wiring in the passenger door switch but not sure. How can I narrow the problem down??

first of all, the switch on the dash is off. I am thinking there must be a short in the door switch on the passenger side. Where is that switch and how do I get to it??

My friend, Ignore all other answers. I can tell you exactly what the problem is because it is a very common problem. It is the "door ajar" switch. both doors has this little tiny switch, about the size of your pinky finger and has a female plug on it. It is located on the door latch mechanism. They are so common on going bad that I have stopped counting how many I have replaced. They cost about 10 bucks and it is a "dealer only" part. They can be replaced without removing the door latch mechanism, but it isnt easy. If you are able to remove the door latch mechanism, it will make it alot easier. You have to access the door lock mechanism by removing the interior trim panel. unplug the wire, and then "twist" the old switch out. put in the new one with a "twist" then plug in the wiring. I suggest you go ahead and replace both of them (one on each door latch) This part has been installed in the Ford Ranger's back to at least 1995 year model. I can tell you that is definitely your problem.

This is a common problem on Ford Rangers where the switch is inside the door as mentioned by dlpowlison. It may be that the switch is ok, but the latch isn’t completely closing when you close the door, because it has a buildup of grime/grease. You can fix this without removing the door panel by spraying WD-40 on the latch from the outside, and then moving it back and forth as you operate the door handle. Once it seems to be moving freely, see if the problem is solved. Don’t worry about the WD-40 ruining the paint on your door; just wipe it off. If you replace the switch, the Chilton repair guide for your truck may show the detailed procedure for removing the door panel. It did in the 1991-99 Ranger/Explorer guide.

Be sure that the dash light dimmer switch is not turned up all the way. If it is, then the dome light will stay on.

You may have a grounded wire somewhere in the door jamb. The last one that I had, I found the problem by pulling the switch out and then jiggling the wire up and down and moving it around. I found the right door, and saw where the insulation had been rubbed through. I put electricians tape on it and put it back together and worked fine till we sold it.

Assuming it is turned off, the problem is more than likely the door switch. It is located in the latch mechanism in the door. There are actually two of those little suckers. One is for when the door is opened and one is for when the door handle is pulled. Probably one of those is sticking. You will need to remove the latching mechanism from the door to see them. If they are functioning properly, there is also a timer circuit that is located in the fuse panel, that could be bad. Other than that it's just wiring. I would say though that one of the door switches is the most likely suspect. Hope that helps you.

This sounds silly but - do you have the light turned on? You know how it has the switch to turn it off, on or set to the door? I ask because I know of someone this happened to. Barring that - it's probably a wiring issue which is a huge headache, best left to a professional.

A kind of weird sounding answer, but I've seen this 3 times in the new body style "NON-Hertiage Edition" trucks. The overhead interior comes on while braking, but not at full brightness. It's caused by electrical feedback (noise) in the circuit, which is caused by a burnt cab roof mounted stop lamp. Has only applied to the trucks with "safety" flashing high-mount stop lamp. I know it's crazy, but this is what I do for a living.

Check to make sure the light switch that sets the brightness of the dashboard light is not on all the way.On a lot of cars that will turn on the interior lights.
