There are both freshwater catfish like Plecos, Cories, and Pictus and saltwater catfish like Columbian Catfish and Hardhead Catfish.

EDIT: As John pointed out, the Gafftopsail is also saltwater, in addition to catfish in the families of Plotosidae and Ariidae (Gafftopsail is in the family Ariidae).

EDIT 2: Tilapia (freshwater-brackish water) are Cichlids, not Catfish...

It is both. There is freshwater catfish, which are delicious to eat. The fish tilapia is actually freshwater catfish and is farm-raised in Vietnam. It is delicious and doesn't taste like fish at all. Then you have saltwater catfish. Not really too good to eat as thy are bottom feeder, eat all the garbage on the bottom of the ocean. Fish taste like what they eat! When you see "catfish nuggets" stay away! That is the stomach of the catfish cut up into chunks. Not too good!!

depends on the catfish. I can only think of 2 marine species though, and that is the colombian shark and the coral catfish. neither one is an appropriate choice for any but the largest of aquariums.

In freshwater you have the channel, the blue, the yellow, the spotted or oppalusis catfish, and bullhead, and in salt water you have the hardhead, and the gafftopsail catfish ,,, mighty tasty I might add !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
