One word: LAYERS! It is cold and windy this time of year. Layering your clothing will keep you warm - long sleeve shirts and sweaters stacked. Be sure to bring waterproof, warm boots. It will probably be snowy or slushy. You will need a warm scarf, hat and gloves/mittens. With the above items, you can do the Freedom Trail - just keep stopping in cafes and restaurants for coffee and food to break up the cold. Unlike my predecessor's suggestions, I say to hell with fashion. You will wish you'd been more practical if you make decisions based on how good you'll look - save that for indoor activity :)

To get to Concord, you will want a car. It is going to be tough to see much there (there is a bridge over the Concord River that was the site of the beginning of the Revolutionary War). However, one of the cannons that the war was started over is housed at the top of the Bunker Hill Monument at the end of the Freedom Trail.

If you've not been to Boston before, there is A LOT to see. Depending on your age and likes/dislikes, there are all kinds of activities. I can make more recommendations if you give me more details...

Nice, i live 20 minutes away from boston.
Bring lots of layers, like others have mentioned.
Sweaters, long sleeve shorts, jeans and other pants, socks, mittens, hats, scarves, are all a must. A hat is important, you lose a lot of heat from your head, so it's important you keep it warm.

A good winter jacket will also be key, quality brands are LL Bean, North Face, and Columbia, but those are all pretty pricey. Since you're just visiting, I suggest going to Marshalls and getting a cheap one there. With layers and a cheap jacket, you'll stay warm enough.

You'll need warm walking shoes, I suggest good winter boots with some nice warm socks!

January... I can promise you it will either be snowing or very frigid out. Either way, there WILL be snow on the ground! There's a good chance you'll be able to walk around and do the freedom trail, unless it is a blizzard. We've already had 2 big storms, but New England weather is very unpredictable, so I can't tell you if it will be a storm or not now. I'm sure one of the days you'll be here you'll be able to go outside.

Best way to get around is well, walking. But, like I said, the weather might not let you! So buses, trains, and taxi's will be the next best thing.

I think you can still do the Freedom Trail, and yeah you can definitely walk around. I'm not sure about Boston, but in most big northern cities winter is killer. Just make sure you wear long pants and a thick jacket. Have closed-toed shoes (boots would be good), maybe a hat (I don't wear hats much but they're nice to have) and gloves. And a good scarf!! You can keep your neck and face warm, and from there you'll feel a lot better. This kind of sounds like overkill, and maybe it is, but I just know that New York City this time of year is sooo cold. You can still enjoy walking around if you stay warm though!

I'm not sure about Concord, I don't think I've ever been there. Have a good time!

White will show off your beautiful sun kissed skin and white sweaters are sexy. Make sure that you wear a warm jacket, like a columbia. I like RED personally, but any color will do. Make sure you have matching accessories like hat, mittens and scarf and try out ice skating if you haven't ever done it before. You should also have a pair of boots to defend yourself from the snow. Sweaters are awesome!

I live in MN, so I know about the cold. You should see about going snowmobiling if possible.

I can't help you about the Concord question though, sorry.

Just be prepared that it could be brutally cold, temps in the teens with a strong wind. Layers is smart, but also be sure you have a warm hat, scarf, gloves/mittens and warm/water proof boots with good traction in case the sidewalks are icy.

Leather is really good at stopping the wind, but it won't keep you warm. For boots, go for function over fashion.
