Asperger is a average to higher than average intelligence form of autism. That would imply that you must be smarter than average than average to have asperger. Anyway, do you think that asperger causes higher intelligence or is linked to higher intelligence in some way. Meaning to have asperger you also are more intelligence? Like a gene that is linked to high intelligence.

I'm a female, possibly with apereger, which is rare. I am at about 90% per population in intelligence. My friend, who is a psychologist said she though I had asperger maybe 3 days after she met me. I haven't gotten tested though. I do think that I have a lot of the characteristics, but maybe got overlooked because I am female.

Some people seem to not differentiate from Asperger and Autism or Autistic sevants. It's not the same thing. Lacking in social skills and being intelligent is not necessarily the same as having asperger. And I don't totally lack in social skills, just certain social skills like taking things literally. Anyway, I still believe there is a gene linking intelligence and asperger. It's just intuitive. The two mostly go together, so they should be linked.

Also, I'd like to add that this question is for my near genius nephews. I want them to have hobbies that they will love and be able to grow. I was wondering if I should ge mthen guitar for x mas as they are 2 years ahead in math and reading. I don't want them to feel just like nerds. If they have a cool hobby like guitare, I think they will do better. It runs in the family and their father is a ivy league engineer. I and my sister were better tan average at music. I just want the best for my nephews.

I have 2 siblings with Asperger's.
Anyway, Asperger's might make the person excel in a certain thing. (math, art, history etc) Good memory is another possibility. And yes, they do tend to be more intelligent. Mostly, it's their social skills that have been affected (negatively).

There's no hard and fast rule that a person with Asperger's is more intelligent then average. In fact:
"Around three-quarters of people with an ASD have a learning disability. Some people who have Asperger's syndrome may have normal or high intelligence but struggle with social skills. Outstanding abilities with maths, music or drawing are uncommon."
http://hcd2.bupa.co.uk/fact_sheets/html/autism.html

More common characteristics include: "marked deficiencies in social skills, have difficulties with transitions or changes and prefer sameness. They often have obsessive routines and may be preoccupied with a particular subject of interest. They have a great deal of difficulty reading nonverbal cues (body language) and very often the individual with AS has difficulty determining proper body space. Often overly sensitive to sounds, tastes, smells, and sights, the person with AS may prefer soft clothing, certain foods, and be bothered by sounds or lights no one else seems to hear or see. It's important to remember that the person with AS perceives the world very differently"

You need to be aware of "intern's disease. As a abnormal psychology course summary says: "You may feel you share the symptoms of some disorder, or that someone you know well surely has it!" It's common.

Speak to you friend and get a list of professionals that will do an evaluation. At the very least it will ease your mind.

They probably have the same intelligence range as anyone else. I know a few people who have Asperger's. One is intelligent, one is slightly mentally challenged (a girl) and is having trouble at school, the last is quite challenged, intellectually.
Chances are, that if you have Aspergers, and are very intelligent, then your intelligence is highlighted by contrast to the Asperger's. It is not caused by, or enhanced, it is just more noticeable.

Since Asperger's is defined as autistic traits with average or above average intelligence, then of course people with Asperger's will be above average. It's part of the diagnosis. It's part of the definition of Asperger's. It's an artifact of us human beings defining this disorder as having an average or above average intelligence. If I defined an ice-cream loving disorder as one in which the person loved ice-cream and also had average or above average intelligence, then lo and behold, this ice-cream loving quality would be associated with intelligence. People would be asking "Is eating ice cream associated with higher intelligence..."!

Considering it's saying you're smart, you just have a problem socializing. I think it's an excuse invented by smart people, to explain why they have trouble socializing. I'm intelligent but very easy to talk to and get a long with. So.. I don't really know if Asperger is technically a "disease". More like an excuse.

just because you have autism doesnt meant you have higher intelligence. In fact most people with any form of autism have a lower intelligence. It is only the RARE few, known as savants, who have an extra high intelligence or special talent. Being a type of autism, asperger is the same way...just because you have asperger doesnt mean you have a higher intelligence...look it up on google
