There is no evidence -- we think -- supporting the claim that ObL was trained on American soil, or that he actually worked in the Pentagon. There is ample and irrefutable evidence, however, establishing that at one time, he and thousands of other people we now call "terrorists" were the "darlings" of the CIA, the Defense Department braintrust, and the President of the United States (Ronald "The Great Communicator" Reagan, at the time).
Why such a cozy relationship? Because, as a previous responder pointed out, in the mid-1980s, we (the US) and they were aligned against the "evil empire" of the Soviet Union and its repressive control over Afghanistan. So convinced were we that the Soviet Union's evil hegemony needed to be stopped that we poured hundreds of millions of dollars (yes, US tax dollars) into camps in Afghanistan and other states in that area in order to train people we then euphemistically referred to as "freedom fighters" (the Mujahadeen). Their mission was to stop and reverse Soviet occupation in those countries.
ObL was one of those people. He trained and armed them well, thanks to both his own family's wealth, support from our good friends in Saudi Arabia (you know, the folks who keep us supplied with oil), and as noted above the generosity of US taxpayers. They were terrorists...only back then, they were "friendly" terrorists, so it was OK to be aligned with and support them.
Unfortunately, we didn't exactly plan on them "turning on us" the way they did...yet another example of this country's appalling ignorance of the world that surrounds us. The rest, as they say, is a sordid and tragic history which the CIA has been frantically trying to rewrite its role in ever since.
Yes, sir! What a proud moment. My country, right or wrong... or ignorant!

No. He's never been to the U.S. And I don't have a single friend or acquaintance who believes this myth about him working at the Pentagon. So, it doesn't jibe with your "most people" phrase.
