I mean is it ok to call a unknown girl of 20- 30, mam, at public places, like bus or resturant. suppose when asking for the salt or something. Or do you take it offensively?

I am of the "true" maam age, and I like it. I think for every girl or woman, it is different. Age, doesn't bother me. I think it is a short, respectful greeting. I have no problem with it.

In the 20-30 range, I was called "maam" a few times....it felt different, but I was "ok" with it then, too. I always looked young, so I didn't feel the age connection.

I don't think it relates to age, but some women do...and they may prefer, "ladies" or some other general term....or if there are too many negative reactions, just leave out the term...and address them by just asking, "would you like to...."...."please step this way..."

It's quite ok and shows you have manners. Quite appealing actually.

It's also much better than a lot of other things young women are called these days! :)

I personally don't like it...but it depends on the person I guess. I wouldn't call her that just to be safe. :)
