I have a winch for my recovery truck, its quite an old unit I think (warn 5000 ?) as there's only 2 wires going to the motor. one Red and one Black.
I can't afford a new unit at the moment so I'm hoping to use the one I got.
Problem is how to wire it so it goes forward and backwards.
Getting the solenoids is not a problem just how to connect everything to get it the way I want.
I tried Google but I not getting anywhere.
Sensible answers only please.

Try contacting someone that sells Warn winches. They may remember the wiring or at least have info that they can give you. Warns website may also be of some help.

Ive got a winch with only 2 poles also red(+), black(-) wires, when using this kind of winch in order to run it forward you apply power to the + and have the - as ground then to back it up you run the pos to the - on the winch and neg to the + on the winch

both wires going to your switch then to the battery dont ground to the frame it wont work right, you will need a momentary Double pole Double throw a 50 amp should work all you will do is switch polarity to change direction, you should have 6 terminals on the switch, lets say your looking at in holding it verticle you have 3 rows of terminals top, middle and bottom you will run your + from the battery to the middle left, and the neg from the battery to the middle right, next your outgoing wires from the top, the top left to the + on the winch, top right to the - on the winch, now the reverse polarity part, the bottom row take the left side and run a jumper wire to the top right terminal the - side then the bottom right side to the top left side the + side all on the switch, and that should do it. its pretty simple it prolly doesnt sound like it but it is.

trust me on this
If that doesnt do it contact me ill try to explain it better

Chances are it is wired like many window motors. The key is in the switch, in one direction, it will let current flow to one of the wires, and connect the other to ground, in the other direction, it will do the opposite, this is how it moves foward and backward. You need to find the controler or switch that goes with that winch.
