A question asked repeatedly is "what kind of cat/dog food should I feed my pet?" I think some of us get angry at the well-meaning people who are recommending top shelf STORE BRANDS which are still junk. I know I used to be a person who thought I was doing good by buying the most expensive brand at the department or grocery store. Then I read the book, "Foods Pets Die For" and now I am a pet food snob. I buy only high end foods. Some people think that certain foods sold by many vets are good because the vets recommend them. Those foods used to be good until the companies were bought up by large corporations who produce mass quantities of pet foods with various names. Those companies often provide food free or at large discounts to vets and staff...so yes, they are still recommended by them. PLUS they make money on the brand they recommend.

What made you a pet food snob? And what advice can you give to the uninformed to convince them to switch to quality pet food?

I would like to add that pet food brands like Purina (Nestle) are extensions of the corporate corrupt food industry. They get to make millions of money off of the "waste" from the other foods they sell and people unknowingly feed everything "unfit for human consumption" to their pets.

What truly made me a pet food snob was when I adopted a new baby lab from pet finder and wanted the very best for her, so I used the skills and resources I learned at University and researched pet food.

Wow, I have to say, any competant person will realize that anything from the groceries store and even most pet stores is pure cancerous garbage.

50 years ago there was no such thing as dog food. Dogs ate the raw meat leftovers from the butchers along with some veggie left overs off of the kid's plates.

Can't people see they are giving money away to a company who doens't give a rats behind about your pets?

For example, IAMS was caught red handed conducting inhumane animal testing on hundreds of beagles.
video footage shows Iams representatives touring the facility and witnessing dogs’ endless circling in barren cells, sweltering in the summer heat. Iams knew the truth yet did nothing to protect the animals.

Essentially. my greatest concern has been the health and survival of my pets. I want my animals to be as healthy as possible, and searching for food is key to their health.

The first thing to understand is that food vs. health isn't one on one. My parents have a cat ,whom is currently 18 years old with no health problems (although we think he might be going blind). This cat has lived with Friskies (one of the cheapest brands you can buy) his entire life. He has always had a rather low weight, but has not had a single health problem his entire life, purchased at a pound with all four claws declawed too. On the other hand, I purchase my cat one of the top brands in bulk online. She is almost a year old, and already is starting to get a bit large. She has severe halitosis, and her teeth are yellowing.

We are looking into the problem with my cat, by changing the food type. We are thinking maybe it is time to pull her off kitten food.

Anyway, the best advice for people is to use what they feel works. There are literally millions of cat owners who feed their cats grocery store brands, and you don't see cats keiling over at age 5. Furthermore, fast food is horrible for humans, and essentially has a ridiculous amount of health problems, that wont stop people from eating Mcdonald's three times a week. Watch Supersize me and you will vow never to ear fast food again, until your next mac attack. If people are not concerned too much about their own health, how concerned can you get them about an animals.

I have noticed one thing, my cat is fairly energetic, my parents cat has never been. This may be age, then again, it could be food, who knows?

Sorry, I can't provide much more on the evils of eating grocery store pet food. There are far worst things a cat can eat, and I assure you that they have much less healthy food in the wild than they ever faced in an unaware cat owners house.

A pet food snob? I have officially fired commercial petfood makers from feeding my cats since shortly after the March recall. No - thank God my cats were not on any of the tainted petfoods... but the biggest most tragic tainted petfood scandal in history gave me the needed fire to take control of what my pets eat. I virtually took a "crash couse" on feline nutrition and began to transition my cats from commercial pet food to home-made cat food. Now, my cats are on 90% raw food and 10% cooked. And they never looked or felt better. Bye bye Pet Food Industry!!!

I became a pet food snob because I just kept researching dog foods. I found out that by-products SUCK and so I now refuse to buy any dog food with those in it. =] I've also noticed that by feeding the "high-end" foods, my dogs have had better coats.

I'm a pet food snob because I work at Petco and I've started reading labels. Those grocery store brands are full of corn and crap filler. My kitty only gets the best!

I am not a pet food snob, but my cat is. She will ONLY eat Iams. Really, I mean she would starve to death if I tried to feed her anything else.

I don't want my pet to get sick, so I buy better quality pet food.

Some kibbles make her throw it all back up, so what is the sense in feeding her something she cannot digest.
