I would like to work in something dealing with Macroeconomics, like in the FED... controlling Interest Rates, unemployment etc...

What kind of economist do you want to be?

Most economists whom I know have PhDs. That involves getting an undergraduate degree and four to six years of graduate school.

But there are other jobs related to economics where you only need a BS -- which takes four years.
