For schooling fish like tetras (never keep them singly), you need sufficient numbers of each species & large enough tank with adequate mid-water swimming space ie. don't fill the tank full of tall plants. I would say at least 10-15 of each, otherwise they will just poke around in loose groups. Different tetras can school together, though not all the time. The body shape/pattern is not a factor. Neon & glowlight tetras will get along fine. Unless you have a pretty big tank, note that you have to balance your numbers, more of one group will mean having to sacrifice having less of the others. Having more of 2-3 tetra types has a stronger visual impact than small groups of 8 different tetras.

I have seen them do it on occasion but I think it was by accident. When you mix partial schools they just kinda poke around and look confused. Sometimes a bully will emerge and pick on everyone in the tank.
If you have full schools of each fish they will school separately but sometimes they sync up and go together for short periods of time. I don't think having a similar body shape really matters much.

They need the security of their own shoals, but yes, they'll sometimes happily shoal with glowlights.
Glacial - the neon is looking for companionship - the mollies are just better than nothing. It feels lonely. Get another 5 neons or return the one you've got.

It wouldn't be common and it wouldn't be permanent, but for a few seconds at a time, they might form a single group... Because they do NOT do this long term, you need to have adequate schools of both (5+ of each species).

it would be better if neons are kept
together with themselves....and not
with other tetras.....they would be fine
with cardinal tetras because they look
the same and just as pretty....but cardinals are
more prettier than neons....only a little more
expensive.....neons does schools with other fishes....
i am not sure about the glowlites but i think its ok...
i have a single neon tetra with mollies and he thinks that he is also a molly and follows them!!!
good luck!

They might mix temporarily, but they don't really school with each other.
