The original concept of the Reindeer came from the Nordic tradition. Many of the customs related to Santa were adopted from pagan belief previously attributed the Norse God Odin and winter rituals. In myth he flew through the air, across the sea and over treacherous terrain upon a magic steed called Slepniur.
The idea of the Reindeer can be traced back to this tradition. St. Nicholas was also patron saint to sailors so when his image reached pagan Europe many of the properties possessed by the old deities were transferred to Christian equivalents.
