Does it really?

Please give us a better example than some second-rate American television show and we can ponder the possibility.

Of all the events which transpired in the Roman Empire that correlate with the United States, you choose this. Never mind that the empire was torn down because of issues like illegal immigration, a war between the Tigris and Euphrates against Persia, a depreciated currency that became worthless, enormous inflation, huge wage gaps, incompetent leadership, a withered military, outsourcing, and an apathetic populous who while besieged by Gothic warriors for two years and without food still attended the games at the Circus Maximus and Coliseum. Except now, instead of asking for the death of the combatant they were begging for the meat on his bones.

There are some stark correlations between the greatest empires the world has ever known. The fact that we like watching brutal sports and are obsessed with cleanliness are not the ones we should be focusing on.

History is repeating itself, the fall of Rome maybe happening before our veery eyes.

Wow did someone wake up on the wrong side of the bed? The show 'New American Gladiators' is a pumped up version of wrestling; scantily clad 'athletes' grappling with each other so that the audience can get a thrill. No one is likely to get killed. In the Roman arena people were mained and often killed. The Roman's used the Gladitorial games for many reasons among them it was a handy method for dealing with those deemed criminal or politically/religiously subversive.

Does anyone know what Jesus said? If one is to accept the idea that Evangelical Christians are following the teachings of Jesus then Jesus must have spoken of the need tio kill Muslims (see Iraq) and to attack people for their personal private sexual decisions as well as herding anyone not voting the Republican ticket into death camps.

History can offer lessons not in terms of direct strategies for application, but in terms of exposing ourselves to a wider world of choices and experiences. It is fundamentally impossible for history to repeat itself due to the ever-changing contexts the world finds itself in, and the serious unpredictability of human motivation when faced with trying circumstances. History thus, in the spirit of the great German historian Leopold von Ranke, is as much about presenting 's the past mentally, as well as physically. Refer to John Tosh Pursuit of History for more information.

Your observation is one that has been made over and over again.

We, as humans, seem to be unable to learn anything from the past, and so keep making the same mistakes and falling into the same patterns repeatedly.

All I can do, as a historian, is look at it and shake my head.

History NEVER repeats itself. Despite the use of this phrase, real scholars of history know that it is far to complicated to repeat. It does have similarities from time to time, but repeat? Never.

You mean America isn't the greatest country in the world??? Hmmm, I thought that's why people from all over the world were leaving their home countries and coming here. Mexicans, Chinese, Cambodians, Pakistanis, Russians, all sorts of Africans, Central Americans and on and on. Maybe you better tell them before they leave home.
