I tend to be a little bit too messy. This is partially because I dont like to throw anything out and even though I can be good at details I dont bother to spend time on something that I wouldnt like doing. As a result I keep too much junk that takes space and makes me disorganized. I guess laziness has a little to do with this too.
I always need some kind of push to get things done. Good thing I dont live alone lol.
How can I set some limits to this habit?

I have heard that people who feel comfortable with clutter around them that their minds are cluttered with too much unnecessary stuff which needs to be released. If you can release the clutter in your mind, you will be able to let go of your other messes. People who collect have often suffer a lost of something, someone, etc. Figure that out and resolve it and you will solve your clutter problem.

I'm messy too, and I tend to hold on to a bunch of useless clutter.

One thing you can do would be to spend some time (say a weekend) and get rid of everything you really don't need. Donate it or something.

Then, since you may still have a lot of stuff left over, invest in buying a lot of storage things (I don't know what they're called, those giant containers to hold old Christmas stuff and the like...). They sell that sort of stuff at Target and Wallmart, easy to find and not too expensive. Organize all your stuff into that as much as possible and put it all away as neatly as possible.

Don't buy anymore stuff that you don't need. This can be tough, just try to get through it.

Force yourself to do some cleaning/organizing every so often (say, half an hour each week or something). Make it a schedule time so that it is easier to keep.

The inability to part with things (throw things away) can be a symptom of a mental disorder, separation anxiety. I have the same problem. I worry that I might need the thing in the future.
I also think that people are as neat as they need to be. What may look like a mess, may have order for me. I know where everything is. I just don't choose to spend the time making it pretty for other people.
I was thrilled to learn that Quantum Physics proved that there IS order in chaos! I knew this all along.

Determine to have a place for everything and put everything in it's place when you are done using it. Then have a drawer or a box or a closet or something like that where you put things that don't yet have a place and periodically go through that area and throw away the things that you thought you might need to keep but after a while you realize that they were not really worth keeping after all.

Hmmm. I'd recommend the p90x exercise video system. You can find it at beachbody.com. It will break some of the lethargy. As far as cleaning, if there's any way for you to clean as you go, that would be the best option. At the end of the day though (so to speak), it will take a mental decision, a mental stand, for you to make the transition. Set a date to begin. Do your best to follow through.

Best way to be less messy is to clean the mes-up as soon as you find it that way
