We have a fireplace that has a gas line running from the wall. We don't have a pilot light but can smell the gas when we turn the knob connected to an adjacent wall. There are real logs in the fireplace and it is obvious that matches light the logs but we need some information as to how to do this safely. Please help! Thanks in advance.

You can take your chances and light it with a match, but be careful. Your best bet is to hire a professional plumber and just replace the starter. When the gas is turned on, a visible flame should be visible and then you can adjust the amount of gas to get the wood started. This is not an expensive part and is amazing when working properly. I install outdoor fireplaces and we use those starters on many of them.

I had a 50 year old house that had a gas bar running under the grate, but there never was a pilot light.
I would just light the match, turn on the gas, and quickly bring the match to the gas bar, and it would light off.
