Just think about how many of the things we say on a day to day basis are merely involuntary responses. "You're welcome" at work. Do we say this because we mean it? or is it just a quick response to the "thank you. "I love you" to your husband, wife, father, mother etc. When you say I love you do you actually in that moment feel the love within your being? Or is it just a phrase that we become so used to saying that it loses it's meaning for is? Prayers at church, such as the apostles creed. In this we announce our beliefs as catholics, but how many of us actually listen to what the prayer is saying and acknowledge that this is our faith. Just something that has been on my mind.

I think we all mean what we say. That is part and parcel of being sane.

When we are in church, maybe we have learned to parrot the hymns, prayers , responses. after getting habitual and being the same again and again and again. You can hear the odd nattering of response even before the clergy starts his part of the next part of the ritual.

I can only speak for myself.

When it comes to I love you, I will not say it if I don't mean it because to me that is the three most powerful and meaningful words in any language.
As for thank you or you're welcome, I do say those and mean it because they do not seem to hold such power to me.
I try to watch what I say, understand what I am saying, and am careful not to say anything I don't mean. Such as the apostles creed, other protestant religions also use it, but if I am in doubt instead I'll say in my mind and heart, Hey, God, I know you know who this is, and I'm just not sure I would be saying the truth if I said this at this moment, and I hope you forgive me, but I would rather be honest than lie about it. Please help me understand where my weakness is so I can correct it than I'll pray for guidance.
I would rather be honest than lie, and I believe he would rather for me to be like that than any other way.

I actually, truly mean everything I say unless I'm lying.
