I would like some opinions on what could be wrong with my 98 windstar it won't start. It started fine today I did all my erranes came home and half an hour later went to go to work and the van won't start. All you get is the normal clicking sound all dash lights are normal the battery tested good (12.26 volts) with multmeter even disconected the battery to reset the computer ( had to do that a few times with my old aerostar) , fuel shutoff switch was not triped the button is still down and still the van will not start. The only thing strange is when I turn the key a few times the power locks will lock and then unlock.
dose anyone have any ideas as to what to check ? I'm mechanically impaired LOL
Thank you
Ralph

It could be several things that is causing your problem. A fully charged battery has 12.5 volts, and can even go as high as 13, but rarely. Your voltage is there, 12.25 volts is enough to start your van, but it may be the case when put under a load, the voltage drops so much that there isn't enough voltage to turn the starter over, or causing to crank very very slowly It could be a bad battery. another thing it could be is signs of a starter going bad. It is not the common problem, but is a possibility. It may be something as simple as your battery connections, check all of them, clean if necessary. What I would do first is have the battery removed when it has set overnight. Take it to a reputable shop or auto parts center and have it load tested. If that checks out good, take the vehicle to have the charging system tested, just to remove any doubt to be sure it is working properly. There is no need to disconnect the battery to reset the computer. That can be a bad thing to do if there are any codes already stored in the computer. Disconnecting the battery only resets the computer TEMPORARILY, If it had any codes stored, they will only come back after a about 100 miles or less.

First thing that jumps to my mind is a weak or bad battery or a bad starter.
Please ignore the person above me, a full charged 12 volt battery will have 12.6 volts. And on top of that, just having the voltage doesn't mean the battery is good, it needs to be load tested. Again, ignor the little person above me, I'm not sure where he is making this stuff up from.
Ok, since I have some time and feel like being mean, I'll explain why the first answer (Techone1) is a moron. Lets begin by analyzing his answer. he says your battery voltage is low, by making this statement, he proves he is stupid as 12.26 is not fully charged, but should still be enough to start your vehicle, especially a vehicle that had been run 30 minutes before. Now we get to the REAL dumb part. He actually says "It starts for the first time of the day because the battery recharges itself over night and allows it to start". WHAT THE HELL is this guy smoking? In what world does this make ANY sense? With this statement, he pushes himself WAY beyond the point of return in measuring his stupidity. His answer is so far off base, there is no way to set it right. Please, ignore this kid who cannot even spell "Parasitic".

Hi....My Windstar has been doing the same thing off and on for 2 years but I think it has something to do with the little black plastic part that is attached to the keyfob cuz when I wiggle it around by the ignition it will eventually allow the engine to start.Sometimes I have to fiddle around like this for up to a minute.
I have replaced the battery and clamps aswell as the starter but no change and I think now over time it is getting worse.

Well the first thing I noticed is your battery voltage is low. In order for the van to start it would need an entire 12.75 or more to start the car. It starts for the first time of the day because the battery recharges itself over night and allows it to start. Sounds like you either have a alternator problem or some sort of paracid drain in your electrical system.
Have your alternator tested and your battery tested as hell. At your local parts store it should be free to have them done.
