Maybe I am being too sensitive but the stereotype of the fat mom who would abandon her desire to leave an integrated party over a table full of food was sort of bothersome to me. Also, the plus size dress shop with donuts. (What's with that?) The candy bar under the pillow of the main character?

My husband thinks those were humorous but I didn't think they were funny because they give a false picture of what heavy people are really like. Wasn't it just another way to single out and tease fatties?

I'm not larger, but I'm a lesbian. The story deals with people who are different from the "norm" and I loved it. There were scenes when the mother was embarrassed and she hadn't been out of her apartment in 11 years that made me cry. Every character had something about him/her that was unique and socially frowned upon. I think I'm gonna go watch it again.

EDIT: About the food, yes, those were stereotypes for fat people but there were plenty of stereotypes of African Americans and White separatists (Michelle Pfeiffer) too.

I am not a large woman but if I was it wouldn't offened me in the least. I think most people just missed what John Waters was trying to say in the first hairspray. I haven't seen the latest one because I hate remakes, maybe it's different to the one I saw?

Not a bit of it! I love Tracy's attitude and the mother is meant to be a total caricature so I can't say I minded.

When I was in high school, the Broadway Hairspray soundtrack was my ultimate feel-good musical.

Hmm wouldn't consider my self fat but could stand to lose some pounds. No I didn't think it was offensive or anything I thought the movie sucked though.

I've only seen the original movie and it never bothered me. I suppose you know that the mother in that movie was portrayed by a man who called himself Divine.

but i loved the older version..and i was never offended by it.

when i watch a comedy i wish to laugh...not think about reasons to get ticked off by something.
