One of my favorite front men of all time, not many can even hold a candle to Joe's stage presence and energy. You could hear as well as see that his heart was in his music, up all the way through his last performance, face showing genuine emotion, vocals rough, gritty, and energetic, knee jerking to the beat, no performer really sold the performance like Joe and the world was a better place to have him. And even though no one tries to say he was perfect, we all know he had his faults but so does everyone else on the planet, and they're very easy to overlook in light of the rest of his life.

He died exactly 5 years ago today and I, and I know many others, sorely miss him and will always remember him as described above.

Rest In Peace

And if you don't like his music or care for him please don't mention it in this question, it's not for a critical anlysis of his works, it's for remembrance. I know what I posted is just an opinion, but one I will stand by.

I never got to see him either, it really is a shame. It makes it that much worse that he died unexpectedly when he was relatively clean for a rockstar, I don't know that he took any hard drugs at all in his later years, and I don't think he was ever really a persistant user of anything much worse than pot or speed at any point in his life. For those who don't know he died of a congenital heart defect at the age of 50.

Saw him perform live with the Mescaleros 3 times. In all endeavors, he did his best to give us our money's worth. I've seen too many performers drag their tired, cranky butts around the stage, but Joe always gave it his all. Tommygun nearly brought the 930 Club down. Of course I remember him. Miss him, too. A guy like me now has nothing to look forward to when it comes to music.

December, 2002: I sent an email to friends and family with the link to the news story of his death. Subject line of my email: "Rock & Roll Is Dead". I went into the bathroom at work and cried.
January, 2003: My husband and I watched The Clash (sans Joe) being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. We both cried again. It was so, so sad.
February, 2003: The ultrasound revealed that our unborn child was a boy.
March, 2003: We decide to name the child after someone who meant a lot to us both...someone who meant a lot to the world...someone whose life and art might provide inspiration to our son when he is older.
June, 2003: As I sat in the hospital bed in the maternity ward, recovering from birth, a little tear rolled down my cheek as I filled out the birth certificate. The baby's first name would be "Duncan" for the character "Duncan Idaho" in the book "Dune" by Frank Herbert. His middle name was to be "Strummer".

So, yeah, I remember Joe...every single day...when I look at my beautiful 4-year-old son, Duncan Strummer. (BTW, he's probably the only 4-year-old who can sing all the words to "Magnificent Seven".)

Of course I remember Joe Strummer!! The Clash was and continues to be one of the original and classic punk bands. They are my favorite. I love Should I Stay or Should I Go, White Man in Hammersmith Palais, and London's Burning.

Joe Strummer will always be missed. He was great.

Yes, he was a great one.

His stage presence, emotion, and energy reminds me of another one just like him, Neil Young!
