Are you getting it from a rescue, private owner, or pet store?
After you do your research - asking the rescue will be able to match you up with one that fits what you're looking for best.
If it's from a private owner and the two have been cage-mates - please let them stay that way. Often those caged together become very bonded to each other - and yes - they do mourn the loss of the other - and two is always more fun! You also have twice the bills.
If it's from a pet store - think adoption first. There are so many needing homes. I have three myself who are up for adoption. One is a single deaf male - the girls are a bonded pair. They all play together, but the male (who is a real lover-boy!) is fine in his own cage. He turns the girls into squeaky toys by overcleaning their poor little ears...;-)
It honestly doesn't matter whether you get a girl or a boy. There are girl cuddlers and boy cuddlers. Their are girl biters and boy biters - and everything in between. The only real difference is the size. Boys tend to be bigger.

You can get whatever you want! Keep in mind that ferrets with white heads (ex. panda, blaze, darked eyed whites, marked whites) tend to carry the Waardenburg gene through crappy breeding. Although most of these ferrets adapt well there could be special needs issues here. If you want to avoid this get another type.
I really and always suggest adopting. Not only are you saving a ferret but it is cheaper! Most shelters will also help you with care instructions and resources for care, groups, and veterinarians.
I currently only have males but I hear that females have no marked differences in behavior. Ferrets are just like me and you. All are unique.

I really would go by the ferret's personality. Also keep in mind that a Panda has a tendency to be born deaf so if that is something you are concerned with, then check the ferrets hearing by clapping behind it and seeing if he or she reacts. Deafness really isn't a problem, just be prepared to curb baby nipping by using more of a scruff (grabbing the back of the neck like the mother would) and shaking slightly and make sure you don't startle the baby accidently by doing something suddenly that she cannot see.
I have chosen all my ferrets based on personality and have met plenty of gorgeous and sweet ferrets both deaf and perfectly normal. Ferrets are great pets, I adore mine!

Well, as for colouration, it really doesn't make that much of a differnce. It all depends on what you like or think is cuter.
As for female or male. females tend to have sharper claws and are better climbers, but are smaller and don't play as much as the more rambuncious boys do. Boys, tend to have bigger, wider, claws. Which means that they aren't nearly as sharp but they are much stronger and bigger, and are able to carry heavier things under your bed/couch/ dresser/other places you don't want your thing to be. Other then those key traits, I havn't noticed much difference in my ferrets. (and trust me, i have owned a LOT of ferrets)
One thing though, if this is your first ferret, you should buy 2. They are very playful animals. When I got my first one he played with our kitten for a while until the kitten grew up and decided she was too dignified to play with ferrets any more and the ferret got depressed. they always have to have a play mate.

Ferrets are high maintenance, need a food that's over 35% protein, and are prone to two very expensive diseases. Read up about the species a LOT before getting one as a pet. There's a lot you need to know. These are not like a dog or cat.

Panda's are prone to deafness. Bandits...not so much.
Other then that most ferrets have their own personalities.

Please look into rescues. We have 2 from one and they are amazing.Cats, dogs, hamsters,or ferrets-they all have their own personalities. It really doesn't matter what sex or what color they are.All that matters is if you connect with them.Take your time.Cuddle and play with them. You're heart will tell you who to take home.Be ready to give lots of time and vet care though. They are very high maintenance.Good Luck!

Just make sure you know EVERYTHING you need to know about them first. They NEED tons of attention. So anyway, go by the one that has the best personality. Play with them first and see which one "fits".
