January is adoption month for my Betta. I got him this year, and he is doing great. I got another from the same store, and he lasted just over two weeks. I think he was sick when I got him.
I have had Bettas in the past, and most of them have lived over one year. The ones who lived the longest, lived in a 1 gallon tank, alone. They don't do well with other fish. Other fish often like to nip at their fins, and we all know what happens when two male Bettas are together.
Make sure the fish you choose doesn't look sick, and hope for the best. Sometimes they will be sick anyway, but if he looks sick at the start- beware!

Some people say 6 months, some people say a few years. I still have my first betta, Ichabod, and he's been here for 7 months. I had 2 other ones while I had Ichabod and they both died within 3 months. I think it mostly depends on the care you give them and the health they were in when they came home from the pet store.

My Betta Mossihari morimoto (or moss for short) has been with me since april 2007! Our other one we had got ick and died.
I clean moss's tank at least once a week and he has survived for 8 months!
just make sure to feed them and clean their tank. Dont forget to put water clarifier (or however you spell it!) in the tank when you clean it out. Then they will be with you for a while. Oh, DO NOT put two bettas with each other or one will die! (i guess unless your trying to breed them) But you probably already knew that!

They should live at least 3-4 years, and 5 years is not at all uncommon... If they are living less than 2 years, it is almost certainly due to poor care by the owner (tank is too small, cold, or dirty, leading to disease.), and rarely, genetically inferior fish.
